She clarified that Ashura is a solemn day of mourning the martyrdom of Hussein in 680 AD at Karbala in modern-day Iraq.
She explained the meaning of the word Muharram which means “not permitted” or “forbidden”. She further highlighted that Shia Muslims take the processions through the streets beating their chest to remember the pain given to Imam Hussain who died in the battle of Karbala. While Sunni Muslims celebrate this day in gratitude to Allah, as Allah saved the children of Israel from Pharaoh.
In the concluding lines of her speech, she said that Muharram, with all of its complexity, will always be a month of deep reflection for Muslims across the world. She prayed to Allah to bless us all with health, wealth, peace and happiness throughout this new year. She also expressed her desire that the world should remain protected from pandemic disease.
