Ramakrishna Senior Secondary School observed the World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October, i.e., 5th October 2020. Bhumika Arora, a student of class 10, through virtual platform, delivered a speech emphasizing the prime objective designated by the United Nations to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It further amplifies towards the development, improvement, and the status of urbanization.
In her address, she also mentioned the theme of the World Habitat Day 2020: ‘Housing For All — A Better Urban Future. ‘
The speaker laid stress on having an adequate home which is, now, more than ever, a matter of life and death. As COVID-19 continues to spread, people have been told to stay at home, but this simple measure is impossible for people who do not have adequate housing.
She concluded her speech by highlighting that COVID-19 has reminded us that home is much more than just a roof. To make us feel safe and enable us to continue living, working and learning, a home needs to be secure, to allow us to access basic services and infrastructure for hygiene measures and to have enough room for physical distancing.
She focused on the significance of housing as a human right and a catalyst for all other fundamental rights. It is the only way to ensure the “Right to the City for All”.
In the end, she urged everyone to join the global movement and make a difference.
“Save our homes, save our planet.”
